Who should attend

This course is intended for all staff members who are involved in caring for patients with fractures, who may also be required to apply immobilising casts.

Course Objectives

•This 3 day course enables staff to achieve competence in safe plaster application techniques and after care
•The 1st day gives a theoretical approach to the application, care and removal of plaster, whilst also covering plaster competencies. The afternoon involves the practical application of plaster techniques

•The second day continues the practical application of plaster techniques.

•The third day involves course assessments of the techniques learned.

Accreditation

This course is accredited by the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, Birmingham City University. A certificate reflecting this will be issued on completion of the course.

Course Overview

By the end of the training you will be able to:
•Discuss the associated pathophysiology of  fractures
•Safely apply Plaster of Paris casts
•Recognise & disseminate to others the associated complications of plaster casts
•Be able to apply clinical interventions / alert other members of the MDT to alleviate potential / suspected complications associated with plaster casts.
•Knowledge of appropriate anatomy & physiology
•Demonstrate understanding of appropriate casts used. There will be an overview of Synthetic and Full Casts with more focus on Back Slabs.
•Demonstrate planning – i.e: equipment, protection, clothes, position, privacy, explanation
•Demonstrate understanding of equipment and its correct use & application
•Be able to identify the use of different types of casts & the pros & cons
•Be able to identify plaster complications: swelling, tightness, loose, wet, & how to correct
•Demonstrate correct removal of plaster cast
•Be able to give appropriate advice / information, care of plaster, complications, pain control, elevation & slings, mobilisation – crutches, walking sticks, follow up appointments.
