Support workers, working either within an NHS Trust, Care Home, Nursing Home, GP Practice, Hospice or people’s homes:

• Healthcare Support Workers
• Assistant Practitioners
• Healthcare Assistants
• Porters
• Pharmacy Assistants
• Carers
• Other Support Staff, particularly working at
     approx. Bands 1-4

Course Objectives

These workshop based sessions aim to raise awareness of end of life issues and the need for sensitive, timely and effective communication.
You will have the opportunity to further develop your communication skills which will increase confidence in undertaking ‘difficult’ conversations with people nearing the end of their life and with their family and friends.

Course Programme

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:
• Describe common concerns, worries, personal beliefs and values as end of life approaches identifying support that is appropriate to people’s needs and preferences
• Identify ways to manage the often ‘difficult questions’ raised by people (or family/ friends ) when approaching end of life  including ADRTs, DNARs, Advance Statements
• List some of the barriers which may prevent a person (or family/friends ) from seeking support at end of life
• Show how you would respond to, or ask questions, and give support to people at the end of life, and do so by communicating in a sensitive, timely and effective manner
• Know how and when to refer to a range of health and social care professionals and specialised services that support people at end of life and afterwards.
