Child Competencies

Course Date: 17 March 2014, 09:30 - 16:30

Duration of Course: 1 day

Location: Trident Centre, Warwick

Price: Free

The priority is to create a high standard, consistency of care for any child with complex health needs, whether they are at nursery, school, respite, home or hospice, regardless of which carer is caring for them – peace of mind for parents and the nurse with delegated responsibility.

This is an evidence based e-learning tool, provided via an interactive, engaging and simple to use e-learning format. It is child specific. The learner is assessed via an on-line work book to test their theoretical knowledge. There are generic questions that the computer marks and there are also child specific questions for the learner to complete and print. The responsible nurse then assesses the learner’s practical competence and the child specific answers provided by the learner. Once the nurse has confirmed clinical competence they update the learners online profile and a certificate of competence is completed.

To get started, one or two qualified nursing staff attend a one day practical training session with the Childrens Nursing Team in Warwickshire in use of the tool. Regular sessions will be run throughout the year. The training fee includes two staff to attend training and ongoing learner support for all staff using the competencies within your organsation for one year.  To reserve a space on the next available dates please email enquiry@cetahealth.co.uk .

If your organisation has already received training and you wish to request password access to the tool please go to http://covandwarkschildcomps.org.uk/

The tool is based upon the Coventry and Warwickshire Competency System which has been used widely across the UK and is underpinned by fundamental knowledge and input gained from working with children in Coventry and Warwickshire who have the most complex healthcare needs in the community.  It could not have been built without the input of the children.

The key objective is to improve provision of support and development for people working in children’s services. The original paper system was developed in 2001 and has been updated and developed regularly since then.  The on-line interactive version was built with Department of Health funding and support of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS.
