Course Objectives

  • To be able to safely and competently administer IV Drugs and Fluids, including, Methods and Considerations, Infection prevention, Hazards and Complications. Treatment of Anaphylaxis and review of A-E approach and Drug Calculations
  • To be able to safely and competently take bloods and administer IV Drugs and Fluids, to any Central Venous Access Device including CVC’s, PICC’s, Midlines and Skin tunnelled lines (Hickmans).

Course Programme

The candidate will learn to administer IV Drugs and Fluids, Both via peripheral venous cannula and via Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD)
The candidate will also learn how to take blood from the CVAD.

The session covers;
Legal and ethical issues, methods of IV administration, Infection Prevention, Hazards and Complications, Anaphylaxis and Drug calculations

Theory relating to the use of CVAD and caring for a patient with central venous access line in situ.  Complications that can occur whilst the line is in situ and safe removal of CVAD.

Theory is followed by practical sessions where candidates have the opportunity to practice the skills using manikins. Once competent on the manikin the candidate is then required to undergo a period of supervised practice in the Clinical Area

Once competence is achieved, the final assessment will take place in the clinical area and the candidates will then be able to administer IV Fluids and drugs via both a peripheral IV line and CVAD without supervision
