Registered Nurses whose role requires them to pass NG Tubes

Course Objectives

To be able to safely and competently pass a nasogastric tube.

Course Programme

The candidate will learn to pass a fine bore nasogastric tube using a guide wire.

The session covers:

  • Introduction, history and NPSA ALERTS
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the upper airways and GI tract
  • Procedure to pass NG Tubes
  • Hazards and Complications
  • Trouble shooting
  • Documentation and Tube checking procedures

Theory is followed by practical session where candidates have the opportunity to practice the skill using manikins. Once competent on the manikin the candidate is then required to undergo a period of supervised practice in the Clinical Area

Once competence is achieved here, the final assessment will take place and the candidates will then be able to pass NG Tubes unsupervised.
