  • Consideration and contraindications with catheterisation
  • Infection prevention
  • Aseptic techniques
  • Indications for catheterisation
  • Theory presentation followed by practice

The candidate will learn to perform male urethral catheterisation

Course Programme

The session covers:

  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Patient preparation
  • History taking and examination
  • Safety measures to be considered
  • Infection prevention considerations

Therory is followed by practical sessions where candidates have the opportunity to practice the skills using manikins. Once competent on the manikin the candidate is then required to undergo a period of supervised practice in the clinical area (male catheterisation only).
Once competence is achieved, the final assessment will take place in the clinical area and the candidates will then be able to perform male catheterisation without supervision.
