Who should attend

Qualified professionals, working either within an NHS Trust, Care Home, Nursing Home, GP Practice, Hospice or people’s homes:
• Nurses
• Allied Health Professionals (AHPs)
• Physician Associates
• Social Workers
• Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs)
• Pharmacists
• Other qualified professionals in health or social care

Course Objectives

Aim:

To improve communication between professionals and their patients approaching end of life, and their families, in order to improve care delivered.

Objectives:

Participants will develop an understanding of commonly encountered issues relating to communication in practice
Participants  can reflect on their own practice, recognising strengths and weaknesses
Development of knowledge and communication skills through observation and participation in role play
To give participants a ‘tool kit’ / strategy to use in practice
To build confidence engaging in end of life conversations in line with the  5 Priorities of care outlined within the ‘One Chance to get it Right’ document

Course Programme

• Key points from the One Chance to Get it Right document and other background
• Identifying Challenges & Barriers to good communication around end of life
• Forum Theatre - Watching a role-played scenario, discussing and identifying issues, suggesting better practice and then trying out suggestions by re-running the       scene.
• Discussion of challenging interactions you have experienced.
• Introducing individual role play exercise in a supportive, safe environment, opportunity for time out, no expectation of excellent practice
• Individual role plays using professional simulated patients
• Activity to share how to debrief and the need for self care
