Any health care assistant who wishes to undertake training to administer flu, pneumococcal and shingles vaccinations Course Objectives. Any HCSW who immunises or has a role in immunisation should receive specific training and annual updates. Those new to immunisation should receive comprehensive immunisation training, preferably through a formal foundation course. It should follow a framework that encourages supervised practice and support and also enables robust assessment of competence. This course fulfils the above requirement For more information look at the national standards document: http://www.healthcare.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/hca-phe-hcsw-training-standards.pdf Course Programme The aims of the current influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccine policy The immune response to influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines and how they work Vaccine preventable diseases – influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal disease The different types of vaccines, their composition and the indications and contraindications for influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines Current issues relating to influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines Communication with patients and parents about influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines Legal issues including consent and use of Patient Specific Directions (PSDs) and Patient Group Directions (PGDs) Storage and handling of vaccines Correct administration of vaccines Anaphylaxis, basic life support and adverse reactions Documentation, record keeping and reporting Strategies for the effective organisation of vaccination sessions The role of the HCSW as an immuniser (to include: role limitations, the role of others in immunisation) Support for the HCSW eg supervision, mentorship and reflection Trainer Profile Trainer: Sheila McSharry Lunch will be provided.
