Who should attend / Prerequisites

This update is for HCAs and Nurses who have previously completed a recognised Ear Care course and are experienced in Ear Irrigation.  Updates are recommended for all healthcare workers who have completed the initial training and who are irrigating ears regularly.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the ear
  • Understand the prevention of ear problems
  • Describe the correct decontamination of equipment
  • Correctly document procedures relating to ear care
  • Undertake ear care safely within the boundaries and limits of their professional competence, responsibility and accountability
  • Update their competence record consistent with their individual level of skill and knowledge

Course Programme

Revision - anatomy and physiology of the ear.

Common ear conditions.

Theory of irrigation.

Contraindications.

Decontamination of equipment.

Practical workshops as required for:

  1. Otoscopy
  2. Instrumentation
  3. Irrigation
